Liposuction begins with a small incision in the area to be treated. Next, a thin, hollow tube is inserted into the incision and fat cells, pockets and tissues are vacuumed out and discarded. Liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis under anesthesia and can last two or more hours.
Common side effects include temporary bruising, numbness, soreness and burning sensations, but most of these effects will subside within a few days or weeks time. Once the area has healed, the patient should notice a firmer, tighter physique.

Liposuction is not designed for weight loss – that should be accomplished through diet and exercise, or specialized weight loss surgical procedures. However, for many people, no matter how rigorously they exercise or how carefully they count calories, carb grams, or fat grams, it can only do so much to overcome genetic code. People are predisposed to accumulate fat in certain areas, and unfortunately, in many cases those areas are not where we want the fat to go.
When stubborn fat deposits resist all your best efforts, consider treatment with liposuction at Advanced Skin Care, Dermatology, and Plastic Surgery in Fullerton, Newport Beach, and Brentwood. Our state-of-the-art liposuction procedures are skillfully performed to remove targeted pockets of fat to achieve a more toned and sculpted body.
Medical technology in the area of liposuction has advanced in recent years. New, improved techniques have made liposuction safer and easier to perform, with less post-operative pain and discomfort and shorter downtime than ever before. Our skilled plastic surgeon can recommend the most appropriate liposuction techniques for your custom-tailored procedure.
Thin tubes called cannulas are used in liposuction procedures. In tumescent liposuction, local anesthetic is used to numb the area where the cannula will be inserted. Large amounts of an anesthetic solution containing lidocaine (anesthetic) and epinephrine (adrenaline produced in a laboratory) are then injected into the fatty tissues before liposuction is performed.
This procedure is often performed without general anesthesia and can reduce some of the side effects associated with traditional liposuction. Because the solution injected into the fatty tissues temporarily shrinks the capillaries, it can dramatically reduce bleeding, swelling, and post-surgical pain for a faster, easier recovery.
In this procedure, ultrasound is used to liquefy the fat, making it easier to remove. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) uses high-pitched sound waves to liquefy fat, typically in specific difficult-to-treat areas, such as the cheeks, chin, neck, ankles, calves, and knees. It can be performed in combination with tumescent liposuction for patients who need more precise contouring.
The first step in a UAL procedure is the injection of a tumescent fluid into the fatty tissues. This fluid is a mixture of salt water solution, anesthetic, and epinephrine. This helps prevent fluid loss during the procedure and makes fat deposits easier to remove. To remove the fat deposits, ultrasound waves produced by a generator are transmitted to a cannula, which liquefies the fat cells upon contact, after which they can be easily suctioned out.
Liposuction techniques are performed to sculpt and reshape the body. They can be used on problem areas that have not responded well to diet and exercise. Commonly treated areas include:
