Vitiligo is not life threatening or contagious, but people who have the condition often experience lowered self-esteem because their irregular skin tone is obvious and distracting to others. This condition effects people of all races and genders, and is thought to be caused by genetics or an autoimmune disorder.

Seeking Treatment for your Vitiligo

There are two types of vitiligo: segmental (unilateral) vitiligo that only affects one area of the body and will eventually stop spreading, or non-segmental (bilateral) vitiligo that appears on both sides of the body and begins either on your extremities or near your eyes.

There are many different treatment options available for those with vitiligo, including:

  • Medications like corticosteroids can be used to help you regain pigment in your skin. This works best in those with darker colored skin and is most effective on the face.
  • Multiple forms of light therapy can be used to restore the skin’s pigment. Excimer lasers can treat widespread vitiligo and restore pigment. Also, UVA light can be used in conjunction with a medicine called psoralen to restore skin color. Both forms of light treatments require multiple sessions to achieve results.
  • Surgery can take pigmented cells from another area of your body and placing them on the discolored areas. This is an effective form of treatment, but is usually reserved for cases in which less invasive treatments have not produced results.

Our dermatologist can help you determine which treatment method is recommended for the type of vitiligo you have.
