Better definition to the neck line lessens wrinkling and diminishes unattractive ‘banding’ in the neck. This can be an extremely versatile procedure that can help people who show the early signs of aging as well as senior patients who want to improve their appearance with a relatively minor procedure. A neck lift leaves your neck more contoured and toned.
Loose skin or excess fat deposits in the neck area are a common aesthetic concern for many people. This condition may occur due to aging, sun exposure, substantial weight fluctuations, or other factors. The most effective way to reduce excess fats, tighten the sagging skin and restructure the weakened underlying muscles is to undergo a neck lift procedure.
Candidates or customers for a neck lift will usually be in the age group of 35-70 years. Both men and women make equally stellar candidates for this procedure. People who are unhappy with one or more of the following conditions may be recommended for a neck lift:
The surgeon will also evaluate the general health of the patient, history of surgeries in the neck area, if any, and the patient’s personal aesthetic goals and needs before giving a go-ahead for neck lift surgery.
Our plastic surgeon will provide detailed guidelines to prepare the patient for a safe and successful neck lift procedure. Smoker candidates will be asked to stop smoking for at least 6-8 weeks prior to the surgery, and for a similar period following the surgery. Fatty foods and alcohol intake will have to be moderated. Patients taking certain medications such as NSAIDs or other drugs may have to re-schedule the intake in consultation with their physician.
A neck lift procedure may be performed using general anesthesia or IV sedation with local anesthesia. The entire procedure will take about two to three hours, and may be performed on an outpatient basis. A small incision is made under the chin. Any excess fat is removed. Some patients may only need liposuction to reduce fat pockets from the neck or beneath the chin, while others may also require surgical excision to remove loose skin along with tightening of underlying muscles.
The plastic surgeon will begin the procedure by placing incisions in discreet areas, usually behind the ears and under the chin. Excess fat through liposuction or surgical excision will be removed through the incisions. If the muscles are slack or separated, they may be tightened at the same time. When the surgical work is completed, the surgeon will replace the skin and pull it tightly and smoothly over the neck. Excess skin will be removed at this juncture. Finally, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures or skin adhesive.
The procedure is relatively painless. A neck garment is worn for the next few days to maintain good contour of the neckline. Most patients will go through mild pain and discomfort for the first few days, which can be managed with pain medications prescribed by the surgeon. The patient will be able to return to work or resume normal activities within a 7-10 days in most cases.
However, strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercises should be avoided for at least 4-6 weeks. Optimal results after a neck lift will take about six months to establish. Post-op scarring will be minimal as long as the procedure has been performed by a skilled plastic surgeon.
